Tobacco Majors Up In Smoke Over Ad Ban

Tobacco majors ITC and Godfrey Phillips lost ground early today as the government imposed a total ban on advertisements of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

ITC settled 1.04 per cent lower at Rs 635.60, while Godfrey Phillips lost 0.14 per cent at Rs 319.55.

Around 45,117 shares of ITC were traded on the BSE, where 840 shares of Godfrey Phillips also changed hands. Incidentally, the combined market cap of the top four cigarette making companies improved 1.9 per cent to Rs 16,399.69 crore last week (Feb 12-Feb 19, 2003).

But, for the one-month period ended February 19, 2003, their market cap declined 5.3 per cent.
