Maintaining its rising streak, the prices of tomato surged to more than double in the national capital on Friday due to restricted supply as heavy rains destroyed the vegetable crop in producing areas.
Tomato traded nearly Rs 20 a kg against previous level of Rs 10 a kg in the wholesale vegetable markets as untimely rains spoilt its crop in major producing regions of Himachal, Maharashtra, Haryana and adjacent areas of Delhi.
“Despite being the most perishable vegetable, stockists and cold storages are holding stocks of the crop on expectations of more rise in its prices,” said Raju Karnalwale, a leading vegetable merchant.
