The levy of service tax has come as a fresh blow to truck owners, who are still recovering from increase in diesel prices in the last few months. Truckers felt the government should levy toll on end users only through a surcharge on freight charge for goods.
This would generate resources for road building projects, according to a release issued by the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT).
In other words, truckers would be opposing any additional levy of toll over and above existing taxes as they were already burdened with multiple road taxes and oil cess.
