Mirroring positive global cues, the Sensex opened with a positive gap of 73 points at 9,040. The index has extended gains and is now up 234 points at 9,201.
The BSE Metal index has surged 3.7% to 5,454, and the Oil & Gas index has gained 3% at 6,564.
Sterlite and Tata Power have soared around 5% each to Rs 332 and Rs 699, respectively.
Tata Motors and Tata Steel have rallied over 4.5% each to Rs 168 and Rs 184, respectively. Reliance Infrastrucutre has surged over 4% to Rs 503.
HDFC, Reliance and NTPC have moved up 3.3% each to Rs 1,457, Rs 1,383 and Rs 183, respectively.
ONGC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Communications and TCS have gained around 3% each at Rs 779, Rs 366, Rs 163 and Rs 525, respectively.

ITC and Jaiprakash Associates have advanced 2.7% each to Rs 174 and Rs 82, respectively.
Ranbaxy, Hindalco and Bharti Airtel have added 2.5% each to Rs 149, Rs 49 and Rs 584, respectively.
Wipro, BHEL and Grasim are up around 2% each at Rs 237, Rs 1,409 and Rs 1,494, respectively.
DLF, however, has shed 1.6% at Rs 168.
The market breadth is fairly positive - out of 2,033 stocks traded, 1,324 have advanced, 617 have declined and the rest are unchanged.
