Vegetable oil imports rise 16 per cent

Total vegetable oil imports in India jumped 16 per cent to 515,972 tonnes in August this year compared with 444,746 tonnes in the year-ago period, according to the data compiled by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India.

Edible oil imports rose 29 per cent to 469,234 tonnes from 363,938 tonnes, while non-edible oil imports grew 42 per cent to 46,738 tonnes from 80,808 tonnes in the period under consideration.

The overall imports of edible oil during the first 10 months of the current oil year (Nov '06-Aug'07) has increased 10 per cent to 37,67,003 tonnes compared with 34,16,543 tonnes in the year-ago period last year.
