The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 94 points at 9157. Fresh buying in early deals saw the index zoom to a high of 9387. Profit taking at higher levels saw the index pare gains and slip into negative zone. As the selling gained momentum the index tumbled to a low of 8799 - down 588 points from the day's high. Late buying in the market saw the index recover some of its losses and end with a loss of 133 points at 8929. While the Mid-cap index slipped 3.2% to 3721, the Small-cap index tumbled 3.5% to 4503. The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,422 stocks traded so far, 1,918 have declined, 457 have advanced and 47 were unchanged today. INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS Infosys slumped 6% to Rs 2,484. TCS has dropped over 5% to Rs 1,488. Tata Motors plunged 5% to Rs 660. Hindalco and Dr.Reddy's slipped over 3.5% each to Rs 144 and Rs 1,164, respectively. NTPC, Maruti and Ranbaxy were down 2.5% each at Rs 101, Rs 684 and Rs 348, respectively. Reliance Energy gained 2.6% at Rs 427, and Bajaj Auto spurted over 2% to Rs 2,280. Bharti Airtel added 1.7% to Rs 327. ITC and ICICI Bank were up over 1% each at Rs 148 and Rs 465, respectively. |
