Winners & Losers of Samvat 2065

The Sensex bade farewell to Samvat 2065 with spectacular gains of 8,813 points or 103%. The index had infact also started the year with sizzling gains of nearly 6% on Muhurat trading which took place on 28th October, 2008.

A study of the top ten performers and underperformers from the BSE A-group stocks for the Samvat year reveals an interesting picture.

The top 10 gainers from A-group stocks on Muhurat Day were as follows - IVRCL Infra up 31%, Everest Kanto Cylinder (21%), GMR Infrastructure (20%), Opto Circuit (19%), Essar Oil (18%), GMDC (18%), Welspun Gujarat (17%), United Phosphorus (16%) and Videocon Industries (15%).

A year down the line, most, i.e. eight out of them were able to outperform the Sensex with scintillating gains. However, there were a couple of exceptions in the form of Everest Kanto Cylinder and Koutons Retails.

IVRCL Infra the major gainer on Muhurat Day, also posted massive gains for the year, up 554% at Rs 417 from Rs 83.

However, Everest Kanto Cylinder which was the second biggest gainer on Muhurat Day, turned out to be a under-performer with a gain of just 53% for the rest of the year compared to the 103% surge in Sensex.

The odd one out - Koutons Retail which advanced 15% but under-performed with a loss of 37% at Rs 378 from Rs 696 on Muhurat Day.

Glenmark Pharma was the biggest loser on October 28 tumbled around 10% and lost 7% at the end of the year. On the other hand stocks like Jai Corp which shed 5% last year on the Muharat trading day, added 56% throughout the year.

Procter & Gamble, Cummins India, Cadila Healthcare, Dr Reddy's Labs and Mahindra & Mahindra were the other marginal losers which were down above 0.5% each.

The major gainers throughout the year who also outperofrmed the Sensex were Jindal Steel & Power, surged 651% last Samvat from Rs 100 to Rs 699. The scrip gained 7% on the Muhurat trading day. Lanco Infratech was up 512% as against an increase of 8% on that day.

The prominent losers for the year comprised of Koutons Retail, Sterling Biotech, Ackruti City and Glenmark Pharma.

Sterling Biotech slumped to Rs 112 from Rs 163, down 28% annually.

Ackruti City slipped 11%, which however was up 10.5% on the Muhurat trading day. Glenmark Pharma was the only exception to the others, it fell 7% yearly and was also down around 10% on the auspicious trading day.
