Wkly Review: Sensex gains 74pts, Bharti shines

The Bombay Stock Exchange index, the Sensex, rose sharply in the last two trading days of the week to end up with a gain of 74 points at 9885.

The index which had slumped to a six-month low of 8799 during the week witnessed unprecendent buying in the last two day wherein the index zoomed to an intra-week high of 10,118 - a swing of 1,319 points.

While most market players interpret the current upmove as a bounce back from over sold zone, the following week should make the picture clear, as to the direction of the market.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Bharti Airtel was the major gainer the stock zoomed 9% to Rs 366. Satyam, Bajaj Auto, Larsen & Toubro, Dr.Reddy's and HLL finished with gains of 4-8% each.

HDFC was the major loser the stock plunged 13.5% to Rs 1,045. Maruti, Tata Motors and ACC declined 3-5% each.

Bharti Airtel contributed 42 points to the upmove followed by Satyam (30 points), Bajaj Auto (25 points), Larsen & Toubro (24 points) and HLL (19 points).

HDFC shaved-off 105 points of the index, Tata Motors (15 points) was the only other major dragger on the Sensex.
