Zinc prices gained by Rs 1.90, or 2.23 per cent at Rs 87.20 in futures trading today, as traders enlarged positions on the back of pick up in demand at spot markets.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, zinc for May contract shot up by Rs 1.90, or 2.23 per cent to Rs 87.20 per kg, with an open interest of 7,047 lots.

The metal for delivery in June-month contract also jumped up by Rs 1.75, or 2.02 per cent to Rs 88.30 per kg, with a business turnover of 1,244 lots.

Analysts said, pick up in demand for the metal from the consuming industries at spot markets and reports of a firming trend at London Metal Exchange led to an upsurge in zinc prices.

Meanwhile, zinc gained 0.63 per cent to $2,560 a metric on the London Metal Exchange.
