Zinc prices fell by Rs 0.40, or 0.39 per cent to Rs 88.55 per kg today in futures trade after speculators booked profits at existing higher levels amid subdued domestic demand.

However, firmness in metal at global markets restricted losses in futures market here.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange counter, zinc for May contract drifted by Rs 0.40, or 0.45 per cent, to Rs 88.55 per kg, with an open interest of 4,041 lots.

The metal for delivery in June contract shed Rs 0.35, or 0.39 per cent to Rs 89.85 per kg, with an open interest of 2,810 lots.

Market analysts said despite, firming trend in metals pack at the London Metal Exchange and Shanghai, zinc showed weakness at futures market here on profit-taking by speculators.

Meanwhile, at Shanghai, the metal rose by 135 yuan or 0.85 per cent, to 16,000 yuan per tonne, while at the London Metal Exchange, it rose by $6.75, or 0.35 per cent, to $1,946.75 per tonne.
