Mega Millions announced that one lucky ticket-holder has won the USD 1.6 billion jackpot from South Carolina on early Wednesday (local time).

Gordon Medenica, the lead director of the Mega Millions group said, "The moment we've been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn't be more excited. This is truly a historic occasion. We're so happy for the winner, and we know the South Carolina Education Lottery can't wait to meet the lucky ticket holder."

The lucky numbers which were drawn on Tuesday were 5, 28, 62, 65 and 70, while the Mega number was 5.

The winner will be getting a whopping amount of USD 913.7 million in cash, smashing the previous Mega Millions record of USD 656 million which was claimed in March 2012.

The bounty had been rolling ever since July 24, after a California office pool of 11 workers hit the USD 543 million lotto.

A new cycle will start on Friday, October 26, where the jackpot will be reset to a starting value of USD 40 million (USD 22.8 million in cash).
