One terrorist was killed in an encounter in Hathlangoo area in Sopore district on Saturday, police said.
"On a credible input, a search operation was launched by police and security forces in Hathlangoo area of Sopore. During the search operation, terrorists hiding at a nearby place fired on the security forces," police said in a statement.
Following this, an exchange of fire between the two sides took place. In the encounter, a terrorist was killed and the body was retrieved from the site.
Police said that the identity and affiliation of the terrorist were being ascertained.
Furthermore, incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter.
"With the efforts of police and security forces, it was a clean operation and no collateral damage took place during the exchange of fire," police said.

A search operation is being carried out in the area. Police have requested the locals not to venture around the area till it is completely sanitized.
This is the second encounter, which took place in the state today.
Three terrorists affiliated with proscribed terror outfit -- Hizbul Mujahideen -- were killed in a separate encounter in Pulwama district.
