At least 14 people were killed and 31 others wounded on Tuesday morning when two suicide bombers detonated themselves near a police station at a main square in the heart of Syria's capital Damascus, the state media reported.

The bombers went off near the police station at the time- honored al-Marjeh Square, the report said.

The state-TV ran footage of the blast site showing damage in shops and some blood stains on concrete that seemed littered with glass.

The square is flanked by a local police station and an old headquarters of the Ministry of Interior.

Blasts and mortar attacks have become increasingly common in Syria's 27-month-old conflict.
