The Delhi Police has booked 18 people for gambling after receiving an anonymous tip about an ongoing session in a five-star hotel in the national capital's Connaught Place area.
"We got an anonymous tip that some bookies had reserved two rooms in a five-star hotel and were gambling there. We raided the rooms and we found that in the two rooms, 18 people were gambling. We also found playing cards, along with stake money of around Rs 1.5 lakhs," said Additional Commissioner of Police SBS Tyagi.
Tyagi further said that the two rooms had been booked by two different individuals.
"When we looked at the guest register, the rooms had been booked under the names of Sudarshan Kumar and Rakesh Kumar. At the time of arrest, Rakesh Kumar was not present there," he said.
Tyagi further said that the hotel had made a serious security lapse and appealed to the staff to be more vigilant.
"The hotel did not verify the identity of the other 16 people, who entered the rooms. We feel that this is a security lapse because the hotel staff did not take basic precautions. We will take up this issue with the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and our licensing branch so that the necessary steps are taken," he said.
