Andhra Pradesh Police held two people and seized 690 kg of cannabis from their vehicle at a check post near Narsipatnam town in Visakhapatnam district on Friday.

The accused, identified as Ashok Kumar Mourya (27) and Mohan Kishore Sharma (26), were taken into custody at Balighattam check post near Narsipatnam.

According to the police, the accused had hidden 10 cannabis packets weighing ten kilograms each in a secret cabin in the Eicher van they were travelling in. The accused, however, said they were sent by a Delhi-based man and were unaware of the presence of cannabis in the vehicle.

"The accused claim that they were sent by one Balwinder Singh from North Delhi. He told them that one of his vehicles broke down at GK Veedhi area in the district. He asked them to get the vehicle repaired and bring back to the national capital. He arranged flight tickets to them," Narsipatnam town police station CI Lakshnama Rao told ANI.

"Ashok and Mohan travelled to Visakhapatnam in flight, therefrom they went to GK Veedhi on road, got the van repaired and headed to Delhi. Both of them say they are not aware of cannabis in the vehicle," he added.

The police have taken both the accused into custody. A case will be filed and the matter will be investigated.
