Three villages have been flooded in Kalapara Upazila following the collapse of a flood control embankment under the impact of tidal surge in Bangladesh.

Around 10,000 people have been affected as two to three feet of water has flooded the area after the embankment collapsed allowing tidal water to enter Nizampur, Eusufpur and Puratan Mohipur villages, Bangladesh's Daily Star reported.

Abdul Maleq Akhond, chairman for the Mohipur Union Parishad was quoted as saying that the farmers are facing uncertainty about the aman paddy cultivation, as vast agricultural lands have gone under saline water.

He highlighted the urgent need for concerned authorities to take immediate steps to repair the embankment to prevent further damage.

Akhond added that the Water Development Board (WDB) had repaired the embankment last year, but it has collapsed again due to low quality work.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement on different roads of the Patuakhali and Barguna Districts have been badly disturbed during the last two days.
