A seven-hour-long strike by staffers of Bangladesh national carrier Biman Bangladesh left around 3,000 passengers stuck at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday morning.

The Daily Star reported that flight schedules of many airlines went into disarray, and added that no flights had taken off in the last 14 hours.

It said that the Biman Bangladesh Airlines staffers had laid siege to their head office Balaka Bhaban in the capital for three hours to realize their 14-point demand, including regularisation of jobs of those who have been working for five years.

More than 100 staffers of Biman Bangladesh led by Moshiqur Rahman, president of its collective bargaining agent (CBA), besieged Balaka Bhaban on Airport Road at about 9 a.m. They did not allow anyone to enter the office during the three-hour agitation.

Plans are now afoot to lay siege to the head office for three hours on Thursday as well.

The agitating airline are demanding a new organogram for Biman, recruitment of more workers in the ground handling department, allowances for meals and uniforms, 100 percent free medical facilities for employees, and regularisation of staff working on a temporary basis for five years.

The Biman employees had laid a siege to the offices of the airline's managing director and chairman on July 1 and 3.
