Nearly 42 per cent people want to see the Queen enjoy a traditional retirement with her eldest son, Prince Charles, taking over her responsibilities, according to a poll.

The YouGov poll revealed that just 36 per cent people wanted Queen Elizabeth to continue, the Daily Express reported.

Opinions have now swung in favour of the crown passing directly to Charles (53 per cent), while only 31 per cent want Prince William to inherit the throne straight from the Queen.

The poll, for the Sunday Times, also revealed public approval for the recently-disclosed "job share" between the Prince and his mother, with 75 per cent in support and just 13 per cent against.

It had been reported last week that many palace staff positions were merged, with Prince Charles' media time being merged with that of the Queen, and his aide becoming the entire Royal household's media chief.
