41 indicted in Bangladesh Rana Plaza collapse case

A Dhaka court on Monday indicted 41 people, including owner Sohel Rana in a case filed over the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013 which killed over 1,000 people.

District and Sessions Judge S.M Quddus Zaman passed the order after rejecting the defendants' discharge petition, reports the Dhaka Tribune.

Of the accused, seven are in jail, twenty-seven are on bail and the rest are absconding.

Thirty-six of them present in court during today's hearing.

The witness deposition will start from September 18.

At least 1,136 people, mostly readymade garment workers, were killed when the multi-storied Rana Plaza caved in on April 24, 2013 on the outskirts of Dhaka.

 

The incident turned the world's focus on the poor and unsafe working condition in factories in Bangladesh.

The case of murder was filed over the incident. Another case was also filed against the accused 18 people of ignoring building code.
