57 passengers detained with 64 kg gold at Visakhapatnam airport

Indian authorities have detained 57 passengers and seized nearly 64 kilogram of gold, which was concealed in an assortment of electronic goods, at Visakhapatnam airport.

Acting on an intelligence input, the customs officials mounted surveillance on different flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

A senior officer of customs department, Rajendran, said they conducted extensive checks on electronic gadgets on three flights that revealed the treasure.

"There is a deep concealment of gold, especially made in cavities, transformers, electronic items, micro ovens, speakers, and all those kind of things. They have come from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Over 57 passengers currently we have detained. Still, examination is going on. It is a very long process and so far we have recovered 64 kilogram of gold, which is slightly over rupees 17 crore," said Rajendran.
