A 6.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded near the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said Thursday.
The epicenter of the quake was located near the Santa Cruz Island group at a depth of about six miles (10 kilometers), rt.com reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said in a statement that no deaths or serious damage had been reported, and added that a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected.
The Solomon Islands are situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 90 percent of world's earthquakes occur.
