91 yr old Bangladesh Islamist Ghulam Azam sentenced to 90 years in jail for war crimes

Bangladesh Islamist Ghulam Azam, 91 has been sentenced to 90 years in prison on charges of war crimes.

Azam, was accused of setting up militia groups that carried out mass killings and rape during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.

According to Huffington Post, a special tribunal of three judges said that Azam deserved capital punishment, but received a jail sentence instead because of his advanced age.

Azam was found guilty of five charges including conspiracy, incitement, planning, abetting and failing to prevent murder and faced more than 60 counts of crimes against humanity.

More than 100 people have been killed since January in political violence sparked by verdicts handed down by the war court.
