Yoga instructor Nanammal, a resident of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, maybe 93, but is still bending over backwards to spread the benefits of the ancient Indian art.

With many years of teaching under her belt, Nanamal is living proof that a lifetime's dedication to yoga will keep you as flexible as a rubber band.

"I am 93 years old. I have been practicing yoga since my childhood. I have five children and all of them practice and teach yoga regularly. I still live strong and healthy due to my love for the exercise and I have neither visited the hospital nor used any medicines till now," said she.

While others her age complain about aches and pains, she focuses on getting tough balancing manoeuvres right.

She can do all the difficult moves including the agonising 'peacock' where the body is held in a horizontal position by the strength of the arms alone.

The grand old woman can also pull off a tricky raised 'lotus', 'bridge' and a headstand with ease.

Her students, who have learnt the skill and art from her, have excelled in the field and are working as yoga instructors themselves.

"She has been practicing yoga since her childhood. She also conducts yoga classes for hundreds of students since the past several years. At this age she is able to do more than 50 yoga strokes and till now she had not been to any hospital for any treatment," said Balakrishnan, one among her students.

Meanwhile, her diet involves only pulses and cereals and she avoids rice and non-vegetarian food items.

Speaking about her achievements she recently won the first prize for the National event for yoga in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Earlier also she had won several gold medals and trophies for different competitions held across India.

Further, the grand old lady feels that lack of financial support by the government is one of the major reasons for many not to come ahead and promote as well as learn this age-old art form.
