The Airports Authority of India Employees Union (AAEU) has said that it is completely opposed to a move by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to fast track the privatisation of six major airports.

In a letter to the government and the Planning Commission of India, AAEU general secretary B.S. Ahlawat said that the since the Election Commission's Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is currently in force, the civil aviation ministry must not go ahead with the privatisation move.

Ahlawat argued in his letter that the hurried way in which privatisation of prime airports was being initiated and activated, would result in prime land being given away to private entities at a throw away prices, amounting to an open squandering of public money.

The Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Lucknow and Jaipur airports are reportedly being targeted for privatisation, media reports said.
