Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has reportedly won the leadership spill motion and has asked for six months to show that he can turn the ship around.

Abbott held on to his position this morning by 61 votes to 39. However, despite the win, commentators believe that the numbers were "devastating" and warned that there could be another spill, even as early as later this week, reported News.com.au.

Reports suggested that the Australian leader was "shaken" by the spill motion outcome and described the voting as a "near death experience" in his party room.

While addressing his colleagues, Abbott said that he had listened to their concerns and would make "serious changes to the way he governs."

The report added that the focus on Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Social Services Minister Scott Morrison is set to increase as they are the three colleagues who have the strongest credentials to replace him.
