Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Thursday stated that about 2,000 girls are killed every day in the country, adding that it is a matter of national shame.

"About 2,000 girls are killed every day in India and this is a matter of shame for any society," Maneka said during the launch of the national programme of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' (Save girl child-Educate girl child) campaign.

"It has become a matter of existence of women as the sex ratio has declined to 914 [per 1,000 males]," she added.

Maneka also said that Haryana is the state with the lowest sex ratio which ranges between 875 and 837 in certain districts ranges, pointing towards a high rate of female foeticide.

The 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign is the fourth major initiative by the Narendra Modi-led Central government after the 'Jan Dhan Yojna', 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and 'Make in India'.
