Sacked Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson has filed an appeal against his six-year sentence for grooming and engaging in a sexual activity with a teenager.

Johnson had his contract terminated by Sunderland after he pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a 15-year-old school girl and one charge of grooming at the Bradford crown court.

Confirming the news, the officials at Bradford crown court had said that the 28-year-old's legal team had lodged an appeal against his six-year sentence, the Guardian reported.

Johnson had already filed an appeal against his conviction in March, just six days after he was imprisoned.

The England footballer was initially suspended by the north-east club following his arrest on March 2 last year. However, his suspension was revoked when the bail was extended by five weeks a fortnight later.

Johnson started his career at Middlesbrough before moving to Manchester City and then to Sunderland for a staggering 10 million pound in 2012.
