Pakistani singer Adnan Sami will be granted Indian citizenship from January 1.

Confirming the news, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Thursday that Sami would be granted Indian citizenship from January 1, 2016.

Sami, who was staying for more than a decade in India, had been trying to get the Indian citizenship since long.

Union Home Ministry was mulling over granting him a citizenship by naturalization in view of his distinguished contribution to Indian music.

He was allowed to stay indefinitely in India in August, following the non-renewal of his Pakistani passport.
