Third secretary at the Afghan consulate, Zaki Adu, was shot dead by a private security guard at the consulate in Karachi's Old Clifton area on Monday.
According to the Deputy Inspector General South, Azad Khan, the guard, Hayatullah, opened fire on Adu in the lobby of the consulate after a personal disagreement.
Hayatullah, an Afghan national, has been taken into custody following the incident and the situation is said to be under control, reports the Dawn.
The DIG said the incident did not appear to be an act of terrorism.
"We are collecting evidence and will obtain CCTV footage in order to investigate the incident," he said, adding that the consulate had been cleared.
Roads around the consulate have been closed for traffic.
The police and Rangers personnel cordoned off the area when the fire shots were heard.
