Afghanistan has defeated Australia by 36 runs in a surprising result in an Under-19 World Cup match at Abu Dhabi on Monday.

The shock result follows closely on from the senior Australian team's 281-run win over South Africa at Centurion in the first of a three-match Test series.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Afghanistan scored 253 in 49.2 overs, including half- centuries by Mohammad Mujtaba, Ihsanullah and Hashmatullah Shaidi, and they dismissed Australia for 217.

The report mentioned that Australia, a three-time U-19 world champion, had lost only 12 of 61 matches in previous editions of the tournament, while Afghanistan had only ever managed four wins.

Australia will next play against Bangladesh and Afghanistan meets Namibia as both seek to reach the U-19 quarterfinals, the report added.
