An Agence France-Presse (AFP) photographer was shot and seriously wounded while covering an anti-Charlie Hebdo protest outside the French Consulate building in Karachi.

According to Dawn, the protest organised by Islami Jamiat Talaba's Karachi chapter on Friday turned violent when a clash took place between protesters and police.

A senior police official reportedly said that AFP photographer Asif Hasan suffered wounds resulting from gunshots fired by protesters, adding that the police had not opened fire.

Hasan was rushed to Karachi's Jinnah Hospital where doctors treating the photojournalist said that the bullet had struck his lung, and passed through his chest.

The photographer is reportedly out of immediate danger now.
