Flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi became the first player to be picked in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) after being signed by Peshawar Zalmi on Monday.

While Quetta Gladiators roped in former England batsman Kevin Pietersen, swashbuckling West Indies opener Chris Gayle went to Lahore Qalandars as the Pakistan Cricket Board started its players' drafting in Lahore's National Cricket Academy.

Heaping praise on the PCB for promoting the Twenty20 league, Afridi said that the platform should be used to encourage new talent, the Dawn reported.

The inaugural edition of the PSL will kickstart from February 4 to 24 in Dubai and Sharjah, and will feature 24 matches.
