Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meenakshi Lekhi on Sunday said that her party had taken a stand against the Nirbhaya documentary for painting Indian men as 'predators', and not because the film dealt with the subject of rape.

"This is not the first documentary on rape, there are plenty of documentaries which have been made in the past and even on Nirbhaya," Lekhi told the media.

"Painting Indian men as predators is incorrect and it's high time the worlds start seeing it in the right perspective. This kind of comments can be made in any society, not only in India," she added.

Lekhi further mentioned that she would be happy to initiate discussions on the Nirbhaya documentary in the Parliament.

"This is the strength of my country that I can withstand the pressure, I can force my Parliament to pass the law and I can bring the required changes where women are treated fairly," Lekhi said.

"It's not about our attitude, it's about a person, who in the garb of journalisms came to the country, sought permission to do a research project for social cause, commercialise the project, and chose to violate it after submitting it voluntarily to the law of the land," she added.

She further added, "The first instance of violation was that police gave permission to shoot inside a high security jail, which itself is questionable, and the undertaking was that unedited version will be submitted to the police, which they chose not to,"

Controversial documentary 'India's Daughter' based on the gang-rape of a young woman in Delhi was aired by the BBC despite protest from the Indian government.
