The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) organized a school children sensitization workshop here on Friday to prepare school children in case of a disaster.

The workshop, inaugurated by Tripura's revenue, health and PWD minister Badal Chowdhury, stressed on issues of preparedness, response mechanism and awareness programme.

Chowdhury also released five books on disaster management for school students.

Students from various schools participated in the sensitization programme on the importance of integrating disaster management, preparedness, safety measures and operating procedures of different departments for better co-ordination and to take measures for public awareness.

The NDMA also demonstrated various disaster fighting equipments and safety measures in schools which would be an important component of the exercises as children are the most vulnerable in case of an earthquake and the various techniques which can save lives and reduce casualties.

Tripura Disaster Management Authority (TDMA) and CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology also took part in exercises for detailed evaluation of disaster management preparedness among school students.

Tripura, which is a highly seismic under zone five, has already sensitized children and the school community on disaster preparedness of some 400 schools under the National School Safety Programme.
