At least 30 people were killed in a suspected al-Qaeda attack on army targets in southern Yemen.

Two car bombs exploded at a camp in Shabwa province, killing around 20 soldiers and wounding many others and in a separate incident, gunmen shot dead another 10 soldiers in the town of Maifaa, the BBC reports.

Officials said the attacks had been well co-ordinated under the cover of heavy fog.

A hidden bomb in a car exploded among a group of soldiers, as the driver sought to enter the camp and the other explosives-filled vehicle was blown up inside the camp in next few seconds, the report added.

The attackers opened fire on a group of soldiers on patrol in Maifaa, before escaping in stolen army vehicles.

The Yemen government has been battling Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which frequently targets the military.

Yemen's is also facing separatists' movement in the south and a rebellious Shia movement in the north and an inadequate economy has destabilized the nation completely.
