Brazilian defender Dani Alves has signed a new two-year contract with Barcelona, thus causing a major blow to Manchester United who were hoping of signing him.

A statement from the club announced that Dani Alves has accepted the proposal of the club for the renewal of his contract, which expires on 30 June, the Guardian reported.

It also said that the new agreement linking the two parties would run for two more seasons, until 30 June 2017, plus an optional third season.

Barcelona, facing a transfer ban, would have been unable to replace him until January.

Alves has spent seven years at Barca, and recently claimed his third Champions League title with the club, featuring in the 3-1 win over Juventus.
