Lashing out at the J Jayalalithaa Government for arresting Tamil folk singer Kovan over a song criticising her, DMK chief Muthuvel Karunanidhi on Saturday said that it was a classic case of democracy being strangled under 'Amma's' rule.

The former Tamil Nadu chief minister in a statement today condemned the arrest of the folk singer and sought his immediate release.

Kovan was arrested from his house by the cyber crime department after his video went viral on social media, and was and booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 124 (A), sedition.

In his controversial song, Kovan attacked the state government, saying that while the state was reeling from the influence of alcohol, the chief minister was enjoying.

The song 'Oorkku oorkku sarayam' mocks liquor shops run by the state government in Tamil Nadu.

Further attacking Jayalalithaa, the singer commented on her luxurious lifestyle while the common man was left to struggle.
