Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel will meet Governor O.P. Kohli at 5 p.m. today to tender her resignation.

Patel earlier on Monday announced her resignation to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) top brass asserting that the saffron party needs a fresh face in the state.

In a Facebook post, she said that she would be stepping down as she was going to turn 75-year old later this year.

Amid speculations that party chief Amit Shah may be asked to take over the reins in Gujarat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership today made it clear that a state MLA would be assigned job, adding two observers are being sent to the state to hold talks with the legislators.

Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu praised Anandiben Patel for her decision to step down as the Gujarat Chief Minister citing age.

Stating this decision would send a good message to the party workers, Naidu also informed that Anandiben would today submit her resignation to the Governor.

Patel, who took charge as Gujarat's first woman chief minister after Narendra Modi took charge as the Prime Minister, citing age issues had in her Facebook post earlier urged the BJP to relieve her from the coveted post.

Patel said that she had two months earlier sought to resign from the party to give "enough time to the new incumbent to prepare for important events like the upcoming 'Vibrant Gujarat Summit'.
