Angelina Jolie has thanked her fans for their well wishes and support she has received since announcing her decision to go ahead with a double mastectomy.

The 37-year-old actress chose to undergo the treatment after tests showed that she carries the BCRA1 cancer gene, which gave her an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer.

Jolie, who revealed her news in the New York Times on Monday, asked the publication to pass on her thanks to fans later that day, the Mirror reported.

The Oscar-winning actress' mother Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56 and she also has a 50 percent chance of getting the same disease.

Following the successful surgery, doctors now estimate Jolie, who has been praised for her choice by husband Brad Pitt, has less than a 5 percent chance of developing breast cancer.
