A day after Anni Dewani's father, Vinod Hindocha, said that he wants to discover the truth behind his daughter's murder, British millionaire businessman, Shrien Dewani, who has been accused of murdering his wife during their honeymoon in South Africa, will go on trial beginning today.
The case finally reached trial after he lost a three-year extradition fight in Britain and was declared mentally fit to stand trial. It is scheduled to take place in the Western Cape Town, reported News 24.
He was sent back to South Africa to answer charges for the murder of his Swedish-born bride who was killed on November 13 2010.
Dewani, who was accused of orchestrating the murder by hiring three South Africans, has denied the charges claiming that the two were hijacked at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu in a taxi.
He escaped unharmed but his wife's body was found in the abandoned car the next day.
The three South Africans involved in the murder have been tried and convicted and are serving jail sentences between 18 years and life.
Taxi driver Zola Tongo's allegation that Dewani had offered him 15,000 rand for killing Anni is expected to play a key role in the prosecution's arguments.
