Slamming those who are protesting at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here on Monday that "in bid to make the CAA a villain, people are on the verge of becoming villains themselves".

"For how long will they be able to hide a mountain of truth behind the bushes of lies," said Naqvi while talking to media persons here.

"The President himself has said in a joint session of Parliament that the CAA is for giving citizenship and not for taking anybody's citizenship," he added.

The CAA fast-tracks the process of granting citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who fled religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan and took refuge in India on or before December 31, 2014.

Members of the Opposition have deemed it "discriminatory and anti-Constitution" while the Centre has maintained that the new law has no effect on Indian citizens.
