Apple iPhones have reportedly reached an ownership of 42 percent of all smartphone owners in the US, pushing down Samsung, a new data for Q4 2013 has revealed.

Q4 2013 figures from the Connected Home Report from The NPD Group indicated that while iPhone hold a share of 42 percent, Samsung is at 26 percent.

According to Tech Crunch, Apple had a 35 percent ownership share for the same quarter a year ago, and Samsung had 22 percent for the same period.

The data pointed that smartphone penetration in the US continued to rise, as around 60 percent of mobile phone users are using smartphones, compared to 52 percent a year ago.

The only other OEM to see growth in market share was LG, while Motorola, HTC and BlackBerry declined in their share.

NPD found that as growth in smartphone ownership has had a direct impact on data usage rising, one of the "key drivers" of that has been streaming music services, the report added.
