Tech giant Apple's second-biggest market in the world, China has stopped selling ebooks and iTunes movies after a government regulator demanded the services' closure.

China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television is behind the shutdown, the Verge quoted the New York Times.

Apple first launched the iBookstore and iTunes Movies in China six months back.

"We hope to make books and movies available again to our customers in China as soon as possible," an Apple spokesperson said in a statement.

The California-based company reported USD16.823 billion in revenue for Greater China in 2015, up 71 percent year over year. It was also the only territory to show positive growth over last quarter's blowout numbers.
