Army troops on Tuesday foiled an infiltration bid by militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, even as the region was geared up for the second phase of the state assembly polls. Three militants were killed in the operation.
According to reports, a group of militants attempted to infiltrate the LoC in the Nowgam sector when they were spotted by the army. When challenged, the militants opened fire and in the ensuing gun-battle, three of the combatants were shot down.
The operation is said to be still underway.
This incident took place even as 18 constituencies in the state were geared for the polls, including five in the Kupwara district.
The infiltration attempt comes after last week's encounter in the Arnia sector of Jammu, which resulted in the death of 12 people, including all four militants.
