The Indian Army on Tuesday initiated proceedings against the personnel accused of opening fire on civilians in the Budgam region of Jammu and Kashmir, assuring that justice will be served.

On Monday, two people were killed and another two injured after soldiers opened fire on the occupants of a car at a checkpoint.

According to reports, the personnel alleged to be involved in the incident were moved to the location of the enquiry. The Deputy Commander conducting the enquiry has been tasked with completing the investigations at the earliest.

The condition of the two injured persons, Zahid Abdul Naqqash and Shakir Ahmed Bhat, who were rushed to the 92 Base Hospital after the incident, is reportedly stable. The army is also in touch with the families of the deceased and has assured all assistance to them in this hour of grief.

Earlier in the day, Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley assured that a fair enquiry will be held and strict action will be taken against the guilty.

"The Budgam incident is highly regrettable. A fair enquiry will be held and strict action will be taken against those found guilty," he said.
