Amidst the soaring tension in the Gaza strip, the United Nations (UN) Security Council has called for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine.

Though the Security Council members were divided on the response earlier, it's the first time that the UN has issued a formal statement calling for peace talks and ceasefire.

According to the BBC, Israel launched air strikes targeting the security headquarter and police stations in Gaza on Sunday and the attacks were described as the heaviest bombardment since Israel launched an offensive against Gaza on July 8.

Meanwhile, Isreal has reportedly sent ground forces to raid a rocket-launching site in Gaza and has maintained that it will not stop unless rocket attacks are halted.

They also claimed that they have been targeting only the militants, but, according to a UN estimate, 77 percent of the people killed in Gaza were civilians.

About 159 Palestinians have been killed and 1000 injured ever since Israel launched an operation on Gaza six days ago.
