ANI New Delhi [India]

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought status report from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government's social welfare department into the reported deaths of 11 patients in Asha Kiran, a home for mentally challenged people.

The Delhi Government has to submit a comprehensive status report with reasons behind the incident by April 19, which is the next date of hearing.

The matter came into notice after a surprise inspection earlier this month by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), which found the inhabitants living in extremely inhumane and unhygienic conditions.

The inspection was conducted by DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal on February 4.

The PIL sought an investigation into the reasons for the alleged disappearance of around 250 inmates between 2001-2016. Salek Chand Jain, who claims to be a social worker, said in his plea that the DCW during its surprise visit at the Asha Kiran had even found women inmates walking about naked in the corridors.
