United States Defence Secretary Ashton Carter has gone on record to say that the defeat meted out to Iraqi forces by the Islamic State (IS) in Ramadi has shown that they lacked the will to fight the terror group.

Carter also claimed that the Iraqi troops "vastly outnumbered" the IS fighters, but chose to retreat, reported the BBC.

The head of Iraq's defence and security committee reacted to the comments by terming them "unrealistic and baseless."

Meanwhile, the Iraqi government has sent Shia militias to the region to counter IS advance. The militiamen have recaptured Husayba, east of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, following intense clashes in the area.
