Assam floods: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi seeks 1,000 crore grant from Centre

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday expressed hope that the Centre would grant 1,000 crores sought by the Assam government in lieu of floods, while at the same time admitted that larger efforts were required in order to tide over with this situation.

"We hope that all parts of this country get equal treatment and equal attention. It is of concern the state government has asked for aid of 1000 crores, we do hope that the central government will provide aid to the state," he told ANI here.

"There are many districts which are facing the wrath of nature and result of non-stop heavy rainfall in the entire North-East region. A lot of water has been released from the dams in Meghalaya which has flooded the Brahmaputra valley, especially the lower part of Assam. Many lives have been lost, many villages have been destroyed. It is the time for the administration to really amplify its efforts," he said.

 

The Congress MP also gave details about the relief operations carried out in the flood hit state of Assam.

"So far, as to my personal knowledge over hundred relief camps have been set up; army has been put into action; rescue boats have been sent out; relief material and flood material has been distributed. Past two days the situation had improved, but today again due to the increase in rainfall in certain districts which has been severally affected," he added.

Meanwhile, B P Yadav, Director at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had given his forecast on rains to continue in the next two-three days.

The death toll due to floods in Assam has now gone up to 36 with the recovery of four more bodies on Thursday. The floods in Assam have affected close to 10 lakh people in 13 districts and rendered a majority of people homeless.

Two people died in Krishnai and Kukurkata areas of Goalpara district, has been the worst hit by the floods , while one person was found dead in Tinsukia district and Guwahati.

Heavy rains in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh earlier this week led to the flood like situation.

The government has set up 162 relief camps and shelters where 1.5 lakh people have taken shelter.

The state government had yesterday announced a payment of Rs 3.5 lakhs to the kin of those who died in the flood. Relief operations are on in flood hit areas carried out by the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF.

The current surge of water has created havoc in lower Assam. 18 bridges and culverts have been washed away while 60 thousand houses were damaged in Kamrup district.

Meanwhile, Union Minister for Sports, Sarbanand Sonowal has reached Goalpara to take stock of the situation.
