A 25-year-old man gave up his career as an aeronautical engineer to become a successful jewellery designer from Nagaon district in Assam.

Utpal Bania, the designer, has been designing different kinds of traditional Assamese jewellery and has his own showroom under the name "Doog Doogi" in Guwahati, where he designs jewellery as per requirement by clients. He also markets his jewellery on the internet through social media and his web page.

Recently, Bania opened a showroom in Nagaon and has around 20 employees at present, catering to customers from both India and abroad.

"There are so many unemployed youth. We should teach them about jewellery designing so that it can create employment in the future," said Bania.

Bania has participated in various jewellery trade fairs and also written a small book on traditional Assamese ornaments. He also makes use of conventional Assamese jewellery designs to create contemporary designs.

Some of his ornaments designs are Junbir, Doogdoogi, Maduli, Satsori, Lokapara, Galpata, Maangtika, Dholbiri and Thuriya.
